Validation Errors
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:12:15 PM »
My site here - http://www.tbredjkie.co.cc is getting a ton of errors from this site - http://validator.w3.org/. It topped out at 340 errors and despite screwing up my forum for abit, they are down to 270 errors now. But my vast inexperience with coding keeps getting me in trouble trying to fix them and would appreciate help with them if you can. I even have a separate admin account setup :dnc lol! Please and Thank You from very frustrated.

Forgot to mention that IE8 shuts down when accessing my site since i tried fixing the errors

No one can start to help you without posting the actual code for that address.

At validator.w3.org, after you validate it, a box appears where you can check a few more options. Make sure to check "Show Source" and "Validate Error Pages" and then revalidate. That's very helpful in showing you where the problems lie.

I do that Cholo but it still doesn't say which file it's in. I've spent 12 hours trying to fix this and i'm going around in circles. And even if it did, i don't understand what the hell that validator is saying lol.

Click on the Line # where the error description is and it'll take you to the doument. Most of these errors will likely be from your index.template.php, but with the way php works, it's just as possible the error is actually in another file somewhere.

You've got a ton of errors there, though. If validating is a priority, I would start with removing all the flash from the site as that is throwing a lot of the errors right now. That's just the beginning though.

At this point, i just want my site to be browser compatible with say IE. Firefox and opera seem ok. The rest of the errors i'm not too concerned about if they aren't causing problems. I mean i'd like to have a clean site but not at the expense of not using any flash.

Since it is your start page I assume it is your index.php file? Unless you are using a portal then you will need to post what you added to the portal.

Start at the top and do one at a time. Sometimes when you can fix one error many errors will go away.

We can only try to get you started. In the end this is something that you will have to debug. Fix one, then go back validate, fix another and so on.

Which browsers is your site "not working" in? I've only checked it out in Chrome and it seems fine. Remember that just bc the site is valid code, still doesn't mean it'll "work" in every browser, and vice versa.

embed the flash like this

:

That should pass validation

:

This one might pass validation.

     Hello

Thanks for the replys so far. I just realized registration was screwed up for the past 36 hours ??? I went into manage registrations.php and registration.php to try and add a confirm field for the email address input like there is for the password confirm. And i copied it identical, saved it and got sidetracked :shckd before testing it. And guess what - it didn't work and disabled the registration. Oh man, i was just trying to save people from making a mistake when they register and then i screw up.
I'll try that Nesa, Thanks. I'd like to keep all the flash i have there as long as it doesn't create browser issues. Cholo - there seems to be issues with IE8 and still don't know why the footer and copyright links don't show in IE8 and in the other browsers, they only show when you are signed in. Some of you could sign up to look and if you want, i could delete your accounts later if you wish.

Tried both of those codes and reduced the errors by 10 but 5 remain and it is way off center now. Took a screen shot of what happens going to my site with IE8.

try this code to align it to the middle.

:

The code you posted wont pass validations but it will work in most browsers. I'll try and see if I can get it to pass validation with some tweaking.

I turned off the 4 custom scripts and tried IE8 again. There was still 1 error but IE was much more stable. The script below is the one causing the major issues and would appreciate it if you could look at it and see if it can be cleaned up.

I'm using it in an html block. Is that right or should it be a php block? Thank You.

:
<div id=style="width: 100%;" overflow="visible">

iDesktop.tv

Not sure what you want but it should be more like this:

Put theis above

:

In the body try the following:

:

iDesktop.tv

Note:
1. Only do ID once. If unsure do class.
2. Read this about overflow: http://www.w3schools.com/css/pr_pos_overflow.asp

Update: IE has no errors now but had to compromise :(

1 error i learned was from the mod "highslide viewer" and have removed that mod. Second error removed when changing popout player to fixed player.
Last issue is the LED scrolling ticker which i have disabled for now but would like to get working properly in IE if you can still help with the code. Works fine in the other browsers :shckd
Problem is it doesn't show up in IE and causes the news fader to completely lockup.

@butchas - strange issue with "you guessed it" IE8 and your mod. Changed hover color to blue from green and all browsers show blue except IE which still shows green :dman

Thanks everyone. Here again is LED code in custom html block:

:

I guess you will need to make the same changes in the "boardhover-ie.css" file.
