Increase image size
« on: January 01, 2010, 10:06:28 PM »
   The theme i am trying to use has a large (1600x250) .jpg near the top. It doesn't match the idea of my forum so i need to replace it. I found some pics on the internet but they are much smaller. I went to a website that re-sizes images like .jpg but the image was very blurry and unusable after the resizing was finished. Has anyone found out how to successfully do this?.

                                                            Thanks!

You can resize images using a variety of photo-editing software like Photoshop, Gimp, Corel, Paint Shop, etc., but if you're talking about making a smaller image larger, you'll always have some problem with pixelation.  You can resize a large image to a smaller size without this problem, but you can't do the opposite.  You'll also have problems if you try to change the dimensions of an image.

What you might have to do is create a new image using the image you want to use as a portion of that new, larger image and do your best with that.  I'm sure I or someone else here could help you out with that if you like.

   Hi and thanks!

  The more i played around with the theme i was going to use, the more it bothered my eyes. So i'll have more to ask when i decide on another theme.

   Okay, back already with another theme  :dnc

 But would like to make some changes:

1 - would like the sides to come in some to match the blue border along the top

2 - the white background is just to bright. Is there a way i can make it a darker white?

3 - of course, the banner/header - whatever it is called that i made and actually like it very much, is now to big. Not length wise but too high to fit so i would need a way to find the measurements of the header area and hopefully make my banner smaller. And of course get rid of the "my community" up there.

  Here is the theme i want to use - anecdota_alt - http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=793

Ok, a couple questions first:

What version of smf are you running?
Do you have that theme already installed on your forum?
If you do, can you give us a link to the forum?

Changing the background can be done in the style sheet. As for the banner can you not just resize it. ???

      Yes i can Bigguy, but i need to figure out the size of the forum header to know what size to make it.

    I'm using 2.0 RC2. Theme is installed. Here is a link to my site - http://www.tbredjkie.byethost15.com/index.php

  1 down as i managed to figure out how to bring the sides in to match the top border. Still working on the others.

   yes, that large white section on top of the blue background. It blinds me after awhile and just find it too bright.

On a quick look through that themes css folder in the index.css I see this:

:
/* This division wraps the entire forum when a forum width is set. */
div#wrapper
{
    margin: 0 auto;
}

I would think making it this:

:
/* This division wraps the entire forum when a forum width is set. */
div#wrapper
{
    margin: 0 auto;
    background-color #whatever;
}

would do it. I'm not sure though if that is the right css file though.

  Doesn't look like it worked.

 I followed this path - admin/current theme/modify stylesheets/index.css

Upload it to your host and then go into your admin panel of SMF and then to current theme and there you should find a place to link to it.

  Tried that and didn't work but did finally find where the location was and renamed mine and overwrote the existing one via ftp. However 600x150 was much too small and i've put up my largest one(1000x170). Height wise is fine but looks funny with the login area still blue. If i were to make another header or attach another pic to the existing one, is it possible to cover the whole header - meaning underneath the login area so it's not blue?.

  And found where to change the background color - it was at the very end of that file. Still playing with colors though.

                     Thanks for the help so far.

   Where my banner ends there is a blue patch that is the login area. I would like to extend my banner to cover that blue area and have the login area sit on top of the banner(no more blue showing). Is this possible???

  I've spent hours trying to figure the following out to no avail.

    My banner isn't wide enough to cover the entire header area and i need to attach another png/gif to it. I just can't figure out how  :( The free banner/header site where i made the banner only allow up to 1000px and that's not wide enough.

    Any suggestions please?

  Well this is what i need done. Take the right side of my banner .png (1000x180) and join it with the left side of another .png (400-600x180) making a complete banner that will fit in the entire header area (1400-1600x180). I can't figure out how to join the 2 png images together.

Ok, sorry man but I ended up staying later at an appointment than I anticipated and I have to start getting to bed now, but...

One think you might not be taking into account is different screen resolutions for different computer monitors.  I'm guessing you've got a pretty high-resolution monitor and your large header image displays correctly on your screen.  But change your screen resolution for a minute to something like 1024 x 768 (lots of people still running this, esp. at work and such) and you'll see that your banner overlaps the login area of your forum.

I can help you out more with this later, but that's your primary concern when working with a fluid width theme.

    Ok thanks Cholo

  I still have lots of other things to do but i want to get that header right. I'll lower my resolution and take a peek.

     Edit: Man, i see what ya mean  :doh . I'm using 1366x768 and the banner is well short of the login area.

Whoa, I see you switched the theme, right?

But let's see, if you cut that old image in half:  1366px / 2 = 683    (is that right? lol).  1024px x 768px is about the lowest resolution you want to design for so, yeah, that should work.

Might not look great, but it'll work.

          Ok - i used a smaller image and centered it using left padding. However, when viewing in lower resolution, the padding pushes it completely to the right side. So how do i center the image without using padding so that it stays centered no matter what resolution?.
