Need help creating a test site.
« on: May 31, 2009, 10:02:12 AM »
:pcc  The idea of a test site was suggested to me in another post ( this is the post and the suggesting on how to make a test site http://www.smfhelper.info/forum/index.php?topic=4546.30 )   I had started about a different issue, so to keep that issue on topic, and be able to close it as solved I am posting another topic. I spent some time looking at search results on how to create a test site here, there seems to be a couple different ways, but I ended up confused. One way was suggested to me, and it seemed pretty easy. But I am looking for the easiest way possible.
The main site was just created yesterday, so not much on it as of yet. Would like the test site running before I do to much on the main and end up with problems.
Thanks again,
~Everis

Let me know in detail what you did, where your confused, and what method your choosing to go with to build the test site.

I haven't picked a way yet. I just read the different ways here, and can't pick or figure out the easiest way to do it.
I did make the testsite folder, but could not figure out how to copy files from the org. site to the testsite folder in the file management/ftp thing.

If you are talking the way I meant let me know a few things first so I can help you the easiest.

What folder is your smf files in?
/public_html/
or
/public_html/Forum
or what

My smf files are in /public_html/
the folder I made for the testsite is in the /public_html/ folder
so I would guess it would be /public_html/testsite/
Thanks,

Well before we continue with this maybe you should see what I told you on my site about your version of smf you are using due to the final release of 2.0 when it happens the support for 1.X.X will drop.

A test site is usually the  same version as your main forum site. Since you are testing mods/edits before you make them on the main site.

Yup I am helping her do it we are almost done! We got a mimic of her database and site files (after I helped her upgrade to 2.0 RC1-1) and now I am just helping her get her paths set for her test site database and test site files.

You don't need a copy of the database a fresh one would have been fine.
Looks like your doing a good job at helping keep up the good work  :awe

Yes, what he said. I am hoping I get a lot faster at this though. Will take me years to get anything added at this rate.  :doh

Well when I did mine I did a copy of the database but thats because I already had over 55 mods installed and had database edits and I wanted to mimic my site PERFECTLY. But its a fast export and import as far as the database mimic goes and then a update in the files to point to the new database. This way also teaches her alot of how the database and file structure work so when she starts editing and installing mods she will be ahead of where most people are at that point in the knowledge end.

I am actually getting a lot from it, and finding I really like it, aside from the worry that I will mess something up.
