 :cry  Nope, this is what I have so far. As you can see the files are extracted. But I can not figure out how to install them.

if you mean you deleted your public_html out of your file manager ... remake make it Click create directory and name it public_html and then put all your smf files (upload everything that was in the zip) to /public_html/  or make another directory in public_html and call it like 'Forum'. THen if you do this put all your smf files (upload everything that was in the zip) into /public_html/Forum/  It's up to you if you make a Forum directory inside public_html.

Where would I click "create a directory"? to make the public_html. Where the files are, there is nothing to click to make a directory, unless there is something I really am missing.

ok figured out how to create the public_html folder. I am deleting the smf folder. Going to place everything in the public_html one by one. Hopefully that works.

Again, I can not thank you guys enough.

 :dnc  I am in.
Should I check this:
Use UTF-8 as default character set
This feature lets both the database and the forum use an international character set, UTF-8. This can be useful when working with multiple languages that use different character sets.

WooooHoooo  :dnc ! Glad we helped you get all setup. If you have any more questions post here or you know where to find me  ;) . I just got done building my test site for my site. It is a mimic of my main site, that way I can now make any edits and mod installs there and make sure I get all the bugs out before uploading them to my main site. This too might be a good thing for you to do (in the future) after you get all setup. Well I will be around!  :pcc

 WHat is the CHMOD?
I installed http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547 stop spammer 2.2
I also set the forum registery/membership for approval.
Maybe I need to start a new thread, just on security.  :embrsd

Thanks for all your help. No Problem I have been thinking about a test site. Sweet How hard is it to make a copy Not hard if you know what your doing and do I need a seperate url for that? No

For the file side:
What you can do is inside /public_html/ make a directory(folder) called 'testsite'. Then Copy ALL the files in public_html and PASTE them in your 'testsite' directory(folder).
For the database side:
go to your database and make a complete(full) sql backup of your whole database(used by smf). After doing that create a second database(NOT inside the smf database) called it like 'testsite'. Import the backup you just made before to the new database. Now you have a exact mimic of your main sites database just it called 'testsite'. Now for the tricky part (so when you go to your testsite and when you click buttons it doesnt open up pages in your main site). Open your testsites folder /public_html/testsite and with a FTP download Settings.php and Settings_bak.php(if you have this one). Open these 2 files on your computer using like notpad ++ or similar (not windows notepad). Scroll down a little (both files are the same) and you will see where it says 'www.yoursite.com' change that to 'www.yoursite.com/testsite'. Do this for all the rest of the lines below that, that are pointing to your main sites directories. like for the sources part that says /Sources change it /testsite/Sources and do the same for the rest of the line in there. You also have to change the database section in this file to point at your new testsite database.

Look for something like this and adjust:

:
########## Database Info ##########
$db_type = 'mysql';
$db_server = 'localhost';
$db_name = 'example_testsite';
$db_user = 'example';
$db_passwd = 'example1234';
$ssi_db_user = '';
$ssi_db_passwd = '';
$db_prefix = 'example_';
$db_persist = 0;
$db_error_send = 0;

When you see the above area you will see your info in there. The only real change you will have to make is '$db_name =' part.
Just takes some common sense is all for that part. You can always try to make those edits on the files and if you have problems you can attach them so we can have a look at them and adjust them accordingly. But after all those are taken care of you will have to open the site 'www.yoursite.com/testsite' and then open the Admin panel. In there just scan over all the Admin area and look for anywhere that points to the old directory of your main site. example: www.yoursite.com  change to www.yoursite.com/testsite   and if its file location like example: public_html/Sources  change to public_html/testsite/Sources. Due that for all areas that point to directories and urls of your main site make them point to the correct location for your test site. There a few of these you will have to do like in 'Server Settings', 'Avatar Settings', 'Attachments Settings', and a few more hidden in various spots.

This seems like alot to do but really its probably a good thing to do if your starting out a new site. Reason is being new to the SMF and PHP gig you will have errors come up and you will have to wait for a response from a coder to fix it and you don't want to cause these errors and have them affect your members. And this way you can play around with things and not have to deal with messing up your main site. When installing and setting up mods and edits on your test you will have to track ALL the files and/or database edits you may have made. This way when transfering it to your main site you can know easily what you edited. If you edited a file (that doesn't include a paths like Settings.php does) you can just copy it over and replace the main site file with the edited one from your test site. Hope all this info helped and we can  :hlp you more if you need it.

CHMOD is your file permissions(755 is safe).  Your can adjust them through your hosts File Manager or your FTP.

Another mod that is good is Stop Forum Spam because of this mod (I updated it myself up to 2.0 RC1-1) check for registered spammers on SFS site and bans them instantly if they try to register on your site.

I tried adding Stop Forum Spam, but it conflicted with stop spammer 2.2, should I go with the Stop Forum Spam one instead? or figure out how to fix it so it works?
