[SMF 1.1.X HELP] Need help with upgrade
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:28:19 PM »
Hi.. I'm new at this sort of thing. I have a paid hosting program. I did manage to install a 1.1.8 smf forum, no trouble, because it was striaght forward..

But what I really want is to upgrade to the 2.0 version of smf. Now when it comes to the cPanel, heres where I'm completely lost.. Absolutely no experince at all in doing any of the workings..

I've read and read the upgrade materials, and I just can't grasp the idea of doing this upgrade. Seems way to complicated for me.

Is there anyway I can get some help here to do this upgrade.

Thanks Ron...

Welcome to the site. Upgrading is not really that hard. First you have to get the large upgrade pack and upload it to your SMF root directory (where you installed SMF).  Cpanel file manager can extract and overwrite the files that are already there. Then all you have to do is point your browser to:

www.yoursite.com/upgrade.php

and follow the instructions. using Ftp is a bit easier sso if you know how to use that it would be better. Do a search here on the forums or in this board for tutorials on how to install and upgrade. The tutorials board would be a good place to start. :)

Thanks bigguy... I'm totally lost when it comes to doing anything in the cPanel.. I did get the Host Package, and installed the SMF Forum. I used the "Fantastico Installer" because it was a straight forward thing.

I was hoping to maybe have someone from here do the upgrade for me..I know I have to learn sometime..

Thanks for responding to my request..

Thanks for the info.. Guess I will never be able to upgrade.. I just can't follow all these instructions..To much for me to grasp..

Well I liked the 2.0 version from using other forums.. But I'll have to revert over to IPB, where I know a little more about it..

Thanks for all the responses.

I would hate to see you leave using SMF because of a simple upgrade problem. If you know how to use FTP it is really not that hard. If I can find a bit of time I can probably walk you through it or help you out if you need it.

Is that the FTP in the cPanel....I don't know how to work the FTP. I've never done any of this stuff before, and its all new to me. Someone else tied to help me sometime back. I'm like they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks..

I thought I could do it, I read most of the Instructions,, just way to complicated for my knowledge..
I thought I could get someone from here to just zip in and make the upgrade for me..Most of the more experinced members know the ins and outs...

Thanks Ron..

Yes..it is sorted.. I followed the Instructions and the upgrade went completely off course. I ended up loosing the entire program..

Bigguy came to my rescue... I had a few conversations with Bigguy. He is an OK guy in my books...

To make it short I ended up buying a IPB board, at least I know what I'm doing there. I'll try the SMF board later, because I do like the New SMF Version of 2.0.

I don't want to degrade anyone here or on the SMF Support Group, but I find the members are not all that helpful. Theres a lot of people who set up forums with SMF and no little or absolutely nothing about making changes or upgrades or installing Mod.'s.. But we try and learn, some succeed and some fail..

SMF Groups need members who are willing to get involved in helping people with problems, more than just linking them to a Post with instructions, not everyone can follow these instructions, as I did and I blew the works. These Databases are complicated enough as it is. If you know nothing about doing the work in there, well its at a lost, and you'll end up ruining the works.. Once its done, theres no reversing the problem..Its final....

I was Willing to allow a Trusted Member of SMF Support to enter my cPanel and Forum to help make the changes. And I would suspect other would also. Maybe you can set something like this up with some knowledgeable members who are willing to help people with no knowledge.. It sure would be nice and a big help..But this is only my suggestion..

I have a couple of Trusted members of my other forum, who I allow into the cPanel to install Mod.'s and programs..

Thanks for your concern. And keep up the good work.. :great

I must say though that one of the reasons people get linked to topics so much rather than getting hands on help and support is that if someone was to always do the work for you then you would never learn. That being said, we try to only let that go so far before we jump in and do it for you. We always try to explain everything that is done when we can. We are not only trying to provide support but also be teachers in a way. I hope that made sense. I don't think you are degrading anyone here and I thank you for posting about this. It makes us a a team aware that we always must be on our toes to help the members out in any way we can. Please stick around though as we can still provide you with support in other ways. :)
