Joomla!
« on: January 30, 2009, 01:34:41 AM »
Someone tell me more about Joomla.

I've heard it's a great CMS system, but how does it work? Also, does it allow me to dynamically and easily update content, like how WYSIWYG editors work?

Can someone give me a good detailed explanation, and if can, how it works with SMF.  :)

I have a Joomla test site I put up, but haven't messed with it much lately. I had an old one that I actually used for a bit but the new version is a little different.
I'll send ya a pm with a log in and password for admin priveledges and you can have a look.

I personally love Joomla with the little experience I have with it. Joomla has professional templates that makes SMF look really part of Joomla anyway.

However, keep in mind Joomla has changed it's license within the past year to make it illegal to use some bridges that integrate SMF and Joomla. If someone could provide more information, that'd be great. :)

The problem with bridging to Joomla with SMF is they have two different licenses. Joomla is taking theirs litterally right down to the letter. this is what stops SMF and Joomla from integration. The licenses. However, you have to remember that originally Joomla was a fork off of Mambo. Which still has an active bridge with SMF if I'm not mistaken. So what ever Joomla has Mambo is sure to. Hope that helps a bit.

Hm.....looks great. idk, I customized my frontpage with my own coding. But let me think of alternatives. just in case. ;)

So what about a WYSIWYG editor?
I'm aware that these can edit text on a page, and output the code according to what is inputted into the field and saved. Are WYSIWYG editors effective enough to edit one piece of text on like the homepage?

You can go to >extensions>templates and edit any of the files for the theme. Add Xinha Here! https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1449 to your Firefox add-ons, and you will have a wysiwyg editor to use on any page, on any site, in any editable area.

Yeah, lol. :lmao
but still yet, I feel like Joomla is somewhat limiting me to it's features. I like to code my own frontpage, to my own style and layout. idk. Maybe that's just me. :( :unde

As far as I know, there is no WYSIWYG editor for the entire front page. At least not that I've found.
But the front page is made of a bunch of components, all edited by WYSIWYG, except for the template, colors,  etc.....

Here is an example of Mambo which basically is Joomla (like bigguy said).
You might be avoiding any chance of getting caught up with licenses by using Mambo.

Here is the example site: http://www.airridetalk.com/

Ok, cool.
However, it looks like this user's SMF copyright is broken...

He legally modified the copyright. SMF allows you to remove the version number from the copyright. All he really did was add in "Version Broken, Bound and Tortured" after it.

It's all still up with SMF's license.
