Help on banning!
« on: November 01, 2006, 01:09:09 PM »
I've got someone that I desperately need to ban, but I also have a good user that lives w/this person. I want to block the IP address w/out blocking the good user. Is there any way to do this? Thank you!!!

I don't think so. If they are living together they are likely using a router so you could not ban by ip. Can you ban by username or email address.

If you had the visual warnings mod installed you could put him under post moderation.

I've seen that before, what exactly is post moderation?  Thanks bigguy. Yeah, email and username wasn't going to be good enough. I'm still kinda dealing w/the issue.

Post moderation means that the user in question can post but before it goes public it gets put in a queue in the admin panel for you to check first.

haha. good idea. Yeah, I'm in the process of getting together some member groups now that the occasion has arisen- but I'll just have them there for the future. Thanks.

I am having a different kind of problem.  I have banned a member..a full ban...and the person can still get on the site and board.  I don't know how else to get rid of her.  I blabberized her but I really don't want her on the forum at all?  Any suggestions?

Ip banning in the .htaccess file might work. Put this in the .htaccess file that is in the root of your SMF. replace the x's with her ip address:

:
order allow,deny
deny from xxx.xx.x.x
allow from all

Or if you have Cpanel I think you can ban an ip from there as well.

Do the ip's have any similarities one to another...meaning are they of a sort where only the last digits change? If so you may be able to use wildcard baning...where * is the wildcard...xxx.xx.x.* or xxx.xx.*

The further up the ip number list (the more of the ip you ban) the more chance there is of also banning legitimate members.

I have banned her ip addys, her screen name, her host...everything.  She still is able to get back on.  She also signed on as someone else so we had to do a full ban on that sn as well.  She can still get on....using one of the ip addys we have banned.  I don't understand how she can get on.  I really want this woman gone...she is psychotic.

Ask your host to ban her ip or her whole ip range. beware though if you ban her ip range others in her area might not be able to get on.
