Restoring a Backup
« on: May 26, 2008, 10:50:49 AM »
In the admin panel there's the option to download a foum back up - but how do you then restore it? There's no option within the admin panel and my hosts say the internal backup must be a different format to their cpanel  backup as it won't restore

If it helps I'm on ver 1.1.5

You will have to upload the backup to phpmyadmin and do it that way. You could also google a script called "Big Dump" and upload that and the backup to your root SMF install and try it out and see if it works. Welcome to the site btw. :)

Thanks for the welcome  :grin

The database backup is in the list in phpmyadmin but it says there are no tables. There's no option I can see to restore it at all.

My hosts have their own backup and restore option within the cpanel, the problem is it uploaded the database backup but won't restore it at all. I can't see how to restore it in phpmyadmin

I'm not very good with scripts etc :(

depending on how big.. you could make sure you drop all tables on the "new" db, then open the backup, and then using notepad++, copy the sql file, then insert the tables that way.. if this doenst work, post back and BigGuy will have to help ;)

Thanks for all your help and advice - I was lucky enough to get hold of a friend who is computer whizz and he managed to fix it all

For future reference I think there should be a database restore option within the admin panel

Hey just wondering: is there a Complete Idiots Guide to Restoring Databases somewhere?
It seems to be something that gives people trouble and there isn't much point having backups if you don't know what to do with them.
I sure don't.  :)

Have you checked the docs site on SM. They have some info on restoring a database.
