[Tutorial] File Manager or Ftp
« on: March 23, 2008, 11:37:09 AM »
Most people think that using the file manager in cpanel is a pain. Well; I do to but it does have it's good points. For instance. To upload a whole bunch of files and folders at once you would zip it all up; use the file manager in cpanel to upload it and then click on it and use the extract link in the right hand upper corner that appears to extract all the files server side. This however sometimes results in corrupt files or 0kb files being delivered to the server.

That is why we use ftp. It is not fool proof either but this way you can unzip the file contents on your desktop and do either each file one by one or do all of them at the same time and the ftp manager will take care of the rest, warning you when one of the files goes astray. This I find takes a bit longer to get a site going BUT it is more effective for uploading files in that 9/10 you will get the files to the server without being corrupt or 0kb. So in actual fact it COULD save you time.

Some good FREE ftp programs:

Smartftp
Coffeecup ftp
Filezilla
Core Ftp

I know this is really old but I need to install an FTP program on my computer again since I recently bought a new computer and wanted to know if you still recommend Filezilla?
Also, do you know what I'm suppose to use for my host and port?
Is this something I need to ask my host about?
I wish I could remember how I installed it on my old computer.
Is Coreftp any easier to use?

FileZilla should work with Windows 7. It's what I use. :)
As for the info, it should be easy to find in your cPanel or whatever it is you use to manage your site. Otherwise, you can just easily contact your host for that info.

I haven't used CoreFTP before, so I'm not sure what it's like.
